Joris is Researcher Regional Transitions at Wageningen Environmental Research, driven by political ecology and a philosophy of praxis. His interests are the formation and contestation of environmental knowledge, the political economy of water, the state and (agricultural) development. His research has been into the rise of Dutch modern water, populist political ecologies, relational comparisons of debt and transformative climate adaptation. Following his PhD at King’s College London, he has taught development geography at the London School of Economics and Wageningen University. He also worked as a water policy advisor in Dutch provincial government. Currently, he combines insights into the mechanisms of state relations with a critical geography to advise and research in regional transition issues. Writing on the political ecologies of populism and the popular of political ecologies continues imminently.
