Emile Smidt

Emile is a political ecologist with a background in technical protected area management in South Africa and Tanzania. He holds a PhD from the International Institute of Social Studies. Emile’s interests lie at the intersection of research and practice with specific interests in crisis conservation in the context of saving charismatic (mega)fauna; the conservation labour process, particularly how it produces worker subjects and structures a mode of conduct premised on violence; institutional misconduct and pathways to meaningful change. He is passionate about social justice, fair workplace practices (including in academia) and conservation praxis that aligns with the livelihood and cultural needs of local and indigenous resource dependant peoples.
